Our Work...
We are often asked why we put ourselves, and our family and friends, through the wringer to run a monkey sanctuary. The simple answer is because we want to alleviate the suffering of primates by providing a safe and permanent home in as natural an environment as possible, and because we want to give something back. To achieve this, our work falls under three headings;
International Co-operationWe work closely with groups around the world and support a number of projects focused on conservation, rehabilitation and education. We have also built mutually beneficial partnerships with a number of international agencies, in particular, the AAP Foundation in the Netherlands (www.aap.nl) and Animal Defenders International (www.ad-international.org) based in the UK and USA. Campaigns we supportAll monkeys are wild animals and inherently unsuitable for keeping in domestic situations, and yet, over 5,000 non-human primates are currently being kept privately in the UK. It is still legal to have primates as pets in this country with a license and as a result these highly intelligent, social animals suffer both mental and physical trauma. We work in partnership with other charitable and not-for-profit organisations on the prevention of abuse of primates in captivity, with the specific aim of putting an end to the primate pet trade in the UK and abroad. As part of that aim we support the campaign work of Wild Futures (www.wildfutures.org) and take an active part in their lobbying of local and central government to implement changes in the law. |
