About Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary
We believe that the animals in our care have the right to peace and tranquillity and time to be with their own kind. We offer them a safe home for life. Our objective is simply to Rescue, Re-home and Rehabilitate HistoryEverything we have here at the Sanctuary is the legacy of Oscar our first, much-loved monkey. We were both working as keepers at Windsor Safari Park (now Legoland™) when Sharon spotted a baby monkey - a newly born, crab-eating macaque - being attacked by the rest of the troop. With the help of another keeper, a broom and a hosepipe, she saved the baby's life. Its mother was too old to defend the baby and herself, so we offered to take on the role of parents and took him home with us; that was 1984. We rescued another another monkey, called Wingnut, as a companion for Oscar and things sort of grew from there. Oscar died in 1998, but we'll never forget him, we owe it all to him. We’ve been working with primates for more than thirty years now. Over that time, the Sanctuary has rescued more than 50 monkeys, most of these through referrals from national and international agencies. Jimmy has also been personally involved in re-homing a further 50+ monkeys to other sanctuaries around the UK. The TeamThe Sanctuary is a family affair. Jimmy and Sharon are the backbone of the team; they have an in-depth knowledge of primates and it is their shared vision and passion for primate conservation and welfare that motivates and sustains the rest of us. Sharon’s mum, Flo, can turn her hand to anything; she is driver, keeper, carer and tower of strength. Then there are the friends and other family members who help out in any number of ways: from monkey-sitting duty to DIY, from food preparation to well-timed words of encouragement and support. TrusteesWe are extremely lucky to have what can only be described as an eclectic mix of board Trustees. All of them volunteer their time and skills to give us endless supplies of help, advice and support. They have stuck by us year after year and, without them, we simply couldn’t do what we do. Each Trustee brings different areas of expertise to the board, but what they have in common is a shared sense of humour that picks us up when things look bleak.
